Orthodontic retainers are custom-made devices, usually made of wires or clear plastic that holds teeth in position after surgery or any method of realigning teeth.With the advancements in computer technology and dental materials today we have a clear thermoplastic material that can move the teeth by using a sequence of retainers that moves the teeth little by little without having braces in the mouth.
"Antelope Family Dentistry" uses retainers after surgery or any method of realigning teeth.
When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase last for a minimum of 12 months. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers. The only guarantee to your investment on braces is to faithfully wear your retainers as prescribed.
We use two types of retainers:
* Clear Retainers
* Fixed Retainers
The retention phase of orthodontic treatment is as important as the active phase of tooth movement. Teeth are only held in place by ligaments and teeth can always move if they are not held in place with a retainer.
Most times retainers can be worn at nighttime, but our Orthodontist will review your individualized retention plan to prevent future tooth movement and orthodontic relapse.
For lasting success from orthodontic treatment:
Wear your retainer as prescribed.
Don't let your retainer get bent or otherwise damaged.
Call for a repair appointment if your retainer is damaged, loosened or lost.
Keep your retainer clean
Keep your retainer in its case when not being worn; never place it in a napkin.
Fixed retainers are cleaned with normal brushing and flossing, however using a water pik can be extremely more effective than flossing. Removable retainers are exposed to bacteria, which can colonize on the retainers, resulting in plaque. They can be rinsed and gently brushed with a soft toothbrush with a small amount of nonabrasive toothpaste.
All the time spent wearing braces can easily be wasted if the patient does not wear their retainers. Retainers are the final step to the perfect smile. Retainers ensure that the teeth do not move back to their original positions. So if you want to maintain your teeth’s new position, it is very important to wear your retainers.
